What is a "trasmatta"?
A "trasmatta" is a traditional Swedish rag rug, hand woven on a floor loom using strips of (recycled) cloth. At Svenska Trasmattor we sell fine, vintage/antique rag rugs, bought up in private homes in Småland.
We also offer completely new woven rag rugs. Our network of active weavers produce beautiful rugs in both traditional and contemporary colours and patterns.
If you wish to buy a genuine, swedish rag rug for your home, then please contact SVENSKA TRASMATTOR at eva@tufte.dk or tel +46 (0)70 615 0463. If you do not want to buy/pay over the internet, it is also possible to pay in other ways, e.g. by bank transfer. Please contact us for more details.

Tradition
For more than 150 years beautiful rag rugs have decorated the wooden floors of homes in Sweden. Generations of women have woven rag rugs in rich traditional patterns and colours. Rag rugs were woven from the material that was available (worn-out clothes, curtains, sheets, upholstery), and weaving skills were passed down from mother to daughter. Genuine Swedish rag rugs are unique handicrafts, and increasingly difficult to acquire.
Quality
A genuine, hand woven Swedish rag rug is produced from recycled cotton material. A rag rug becomes stronger, more firm and durable in structure, the softer and more worn the cloths strips used for weaving are, and the harder the weaver is able to beat together the rug in the process of weaving.
Unique
A genuine rag rug is a unique product - no two Swedish rag rugs are alike! For this reason it is only possible to buy one of each of the rugs that are presented in this shop. ).
The rugs
The rugs I offer are very varied and come in all lengths (1 to 20 meters) and colours. Each trasmatta has its own history and "soul." The new woven rugs are produced by local weavers here in Småland. The old/antique rugs have been woven through the last 100 years, and I buy them in private homes. Currently, we have about 300 rag rugs in all lengths, colours and patterns to offer.

NEWS: Vintage handwoven PLASTIC rugs 1950's-80's!
History
The history of Swedish rag rugs started in the early 1800’s, in manors, where rooms and halls were specially decorated for banquets, holidays and guests. Here, families could afford to use their surplus fabrics for weaving marvellous rugs, and these fine woven rag rugs soon became status symbols. Improved living standards in the 19th century led to most larger farm houses establishing a “finrum” (fine room) where rag rugs became a fashionable object of decoration. In 1880 rag rugs had become common in all Swedish homes. Preferably several rag rugs should lie side by side with just a little space between. In winter the rugs protected from draft, and many homes had special rag rugs for each feast/season.
